Maniac - Will's Review

So a slasher this week - Yay! I do love me a slasher!

A very atypical one though; Maniac avoids the conventions of following a group of potential victims (a la FT13th, Elm Street) or even one stand out victim (a la Halloween), instead we follow the killer; but even for that, this isn't a "hero killer" movie, not do we understand his motives (beyond "he's crazy") for quite a while.

On the subject of his crazy, the insanity is brilliantly written and acted - this is no hammed up 'conversations with himself' insanity; this is real non-linear crazy.

As he nails each of his latest victims' scalp to a mannequin (which is his MO) he does have a habit if conversing with himself, but he switches sides of the conversation rapidly; there is no 'call and return' preformed by two distinct personalities, just a jumble of thoughts that bleed into one another. At times these little monologues genuinely unnerving, not because if any particular content, but because you could easily believe them as the ramblings of a madman.

I also found the level of remorse interesting; at times he would seem genuinely sorry for his killings, even while performing them.

It's a shame then, that the story is so straight forward, and the killings so bland; well executed (by FX maestro Tom Savinni) but dull. The only real stand-out death being when Savinni himself (appearing simply because he already cad a cast of his own head) is shot in the head, causing his head to explode in a spectacularly over the top fashion.

There are some nice quasi-supernatural parts near the end, but they aren't enough to rescue the movie.

Despite a great performance from the lead, I found the whole affaire to be a little slow; I can see why this one has been re-made.

I enjoyed it well enough, but can't recommend it due to the pace.

Maniac - Lisas Review

***SPOILERS***

Back with a familiar feel this week.  This weeks movie felt like we were back on our Beyond Nasty challenge again.  Is that a bad or good thing I hear you ask?  Well, neither kinda..... this is one of those films that pass an hour and a half and you don't think its bad enough to slate, but at the same time you're left feeling kinda 'meh' about it.  I don't want to be too unkind about this movie as it actually wasn't too bad, but I can't help but feel Joe Spinnell is more deserving of better material... unfortunate that he actually wrote 'Maniac'.

So our premis here is a middle aged, chunky, single man (Frank) living in New York.  Its shown pretty much from the getgo that he's a bit of a freak.  We are shown that he murders young women, scalps them and then places the scalp on a mannequins in his appartment.  He has several mannequins, obviously hinting that he is a seasoned serial killer.  After several nights of sleeping with his new scalp adorned mannequins.  He goes out to find a new victim.

We are also made aware that he has a bit of a mother complex.  His mum was a nasty piece of work who died in a car accident.  Frank isn't quite ready to accept mummy dearest has gone so he seems to think each of the mannequins IS his mother, having full, allbeit one-sided conversations with her.

Run! Bitch Run! - Will's review

Before watching this weeks movie, I wasn't sure from the trailer if it were an parody of the rape revenge / exploitation movies of the 70's and 80's, or an homage to them.

In truth, it's a love letter to them.

Run, Bitch, Run - Lisa's Review

*** SPOILERS ***

So quite a recent one for review this week.  Having seen the trailer for this one a while back, I thought it looked quite interesting.  Reading the premis, you may think... interesting?? Are you sick in the head?... well possibly, but that aside, something which needs to be said about this movie is that although it is about a horrid subject matter, it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously in its style.  This movie reminded me an awful lot of a Tarantino movie in its style and direction.

So the basic premis here is following 2 catholic schoolgirls as they go door-to-door trying to sell bibles to make money for their school.  It becomes very clear right from the start that the movie is aimed primarily at a male audience, as the girls are pretty much every inch the 'fantasy' image of a school girl, complete with short kilted skirt, long socks and a full face of make-up.. having attended a catholic school, I can assure you, this is obviously not a reality.  From this itself, I didn't take the movie seriously from the get-go and I think that's what allowed me to enjoy it for what it was.  I'm a Tarantino fan and this reminded me of him all the way through.

Back to the premis.. one of our schoolgirls, Rebecca is a little rebellious, a little naughty.. just so much to allow you a good ogle at her walking around naked and enough to also point out that our other girl (Catherine) is the stereotypical 'good girl', telling her friend off for her brazenness and making her cover up.  Soooo a good little catholic girl, a virgin obviously... I wonder who our 'Bitch' of the movie will be?

The Last House on Dead End Street - Will's Review

This is going to be short.

I was even considering just putting the word "shit" in massive letters, and leaving it at that but if anyone actually reads these things, they deserve better...

The Last House on Dead End Street - Lisa's Review

*** SPOILERS ***

So having just watched this weeks movie the question is... how the hell am I going to review this one?  I could write the review in 2 words if you like?

Monumentally Crap!!

Not good enough?  Meh, I expected as much.  Ok, lets start with a basic premis..We have a guy get out of prison and rather than stick to making porn movies, which is what he is used to, he decides to make snuff movies.  He wants "something real, thats never been done before, something with action".  Thats pretty much it I'm afraid.  Yup, I kid you not!

He teams up with a band of rather tasteless individuals (both male and female) and they proceed to kidnap, torture and kill 4 individuals.  Why these people pander to his every whim is anyones guess.  They are indeed very weird folk and indulge in some odd pastimes, but its a bit of a step to go from orgies and S&M to actual torture and murder.

Who Can Kill a Child - Will's Review

This weeks movie opens with 8 minutes of disturbing real-life footage (concentration camps, victims of Korean and Vietnam wars ect. ) all captioned to remind us how badly children suffer during such things. Grim stuff.

Then we cut to a happy beach scene... Where a dead woman washes ashore - having apparently been stabbed repeatedly, including in her thighs.

This is clearly the feel-good family movie of the year!

Who Can Kill a Child - Lisa's Review

*** SPOILERS ***

I read the title of this weeks movie and right away got completely the wrong idea about what sort of movie this was going to be.  Since becoming a mum, I find any kind of child murder/torture pretty near impossible to watch, so I worried how I'd manage with this one.  However, it seems I was wrong about the plot line here.

The first 5-10 minutes of the movie were very, very difficult for me to watch, even moreso because it is real documentary footage of atrocities including World War 2, Vietnam and several famines.  This footage is horrid!  Not anything I haven't seen before and something we should never forget, but it's still difficult to watch none-the-less.  The footage concentrates on the effects on the children and gives the scarilly high number of deaths in these atrocities which can be attributed to being kids.  I've always found footage like this difficult, obviously because we know its real, but since becoming a mother, any kind of footage involving children is guaranteed to start me off.  Make it real and you have one depressed young lady on your hands.  The footage is interspersed throughout with an eerie soundtrack of children singing.  The tune will probably stay in my head for weeks to come (along with some of those images).  The point?  To get through to the viewer what children have been put through over the years down to us adults.  The biggest victim is always the children. Who's to say they won't have had enough of it being that way some day... and so to the premis of our movie.

The first 10 minutes and this footage seems to be the reason for the on and off of the DPP list.  It really isn't required to 'get' the movie, but it certainly adds strength to the premis.
